When homeowners reach out to us about a closet project, the first question is almost always about size. "Is my closet big enough for a walk-in system?" or "Can we convert this reach-in into a walk-in?" But size is only part of the equation. The right system depends on how you live, not just how much space you have.

What counts as a walk-in vs. a reach-in?

A walk-in closet is any closet you can physically step inside. That doesn't mean it needs to be huge. We've designed walk-in systems for rooms as compact as 5' x 5'. The key is whether you're stepping into the space or reaching into it from outside.

A reach-in is the standard closet behind a single or double door. You stand outside and reach in. These are the most common closets in homes, and when they're designed well, they hold more than most people expect.

When a walk-in makes sense

Walk-ins shine when you have the space and want a dedicated dressing area. They work especially well for shared closets where two people need their own zones. If you have a lot of clothing, accessories, and shoes, a walk-in gives you room to spread out and see everything at a glance.

ADD: Specific measurements. "If your room is at least X by Y, a walk-in might work." Include a real Auburn project example -- the smallest walk-in you've successfully designed.

When a reach-in is the smarter choice

Reach-ins get overlooked, but they're often the better option. In a guest room, kids' room, or hallway, a well-designed reach-in gives you everything you need without eating into your floor space. They're also typically less expensive, which means you can outfit multiple closets throughout the house for the same budget as one large walk-in.

The real question: how do your mornings work?

Forget square footage for a second. Think about your morning routine. Do you get dressed in the closet or the bedroom? Do you and your partner get ready at the same time? Do you fold most things or hang most things? These habits matter more than room dimensions when choosing the right system.

ADD: A story from a real client. "We had a homeowner in [Auburn neighborhood] who thought they needed a walk-in, but after we talked through their routine, a reach-in with [specific features] ended up being exactly right."
